The Crouse branch of this family tree is a very stubborn and tough brick wall. The four Mysteries are how they connect and just who are their parents and siblings.

Elizabeth L. Crouse was born about 1820 in Tennessee and died after the 1880 census in Hardeman County. She is believed to be the daughter of Unknown CROUSE and Mary (maiden name unknown).  They are believed to have been in McNairy County TN prior to 1840.

A Mary Crouse is enumerated on the 1850 census as being born in North Carolina circa 1895.

Elizabeth married Jones Taylor, born 1819 in Rowan county N.C. Jones Taylor died in Hardeman County Tennessee Between 1850 - 1856. Jones and Elizabeth had the following children:

Sarah J. CROUSE: born ca 1823 in TN. Sarah married Giles TAYLOR on 17 Nov. 1842 in Hardeman CO. TN. The relationship to Elizabeth L ( CROUSE ) Taylor is unknown at this time. If they were sisters where was Sarah living on the 1840 census ? If the Mary CROUSE age 55 living with Jones and Elizabeth in 1840 was indeed Elizabeth's mother why was Sarah if also a daughter living elsewhere? It is a known fact that Giles TAYLOR and Jones TAYLOR were brothers.

Giles and Sarah moved to Arkansas between 1849 and 1850. Giles died 19 Sept. 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. Children of Giles and Sarah ( CROUSE ) Taylor were:

  1. Mary Albra Pierson (~1844-)
  2. Coleman (~1846-)
  3. Henry Bell Edward (1847-1901)
  4. Thomas J. (~1849-)
  5. Lydia L. (~1852-)
  6. Lustra J. (~1852-)
  7. Maranda E. (~1857-)

John Crouse: born ca 1803 in NC.

John  was reported as age 47, born in NC and a cabinet maker on the 1850 census of Hardeman CO TN. He lives two households away from my g-great grandparents Jones and Elizabeth ( CROUSE) Taylor.

John's wife is Sarah age 25 also living with John is Jane age 1 and William Cervin age 22 , cabinet maker.

This John is to old to be a son for Mary CROUSE age 55 . Could he be a brother to Mary's unknown husband. Could he be a son to Mary's unknown husband by a first marriage? Perhaps Mary is not the mother of my Elizabeth at all. How are these four:

  • Elizabeth L. ( b ca 1819 , TN ),
  • Sarah C. ( b. ca. 1823, TN ),
  • Mary ( b. ca 1795, NC )
  • and John (. b ca 1803, NC ) related?

Do you have the answer to my Mystery?
